Temperament in the books

Rare, powerful, cunning, and deeply intimidating. A black dragon is associated with intelligence, not automatic villainy.

Known bonded dragon

Tairn — Violet Sorrengail

Common signet tendency

High-impact power, command, or a large-area ability (unofficial tendency).

Unofficial interpretation: This tendency is a reader-facing match for the quiz. It is not a canon rule, an official Dragonkind result, or a promise about a rider’s signet.

How to tell it from the other five

The black Morningstartail is the heavy, mace-like tail reference, with Tairn as the named example bonded to Violet Sorrengail. That separates it from both dagger rows, whose tail implies a narrower cutting point, and from the Swordtail rows, whose tail reads as a blade. Tairn’s scale and reputation also make this an unusually strong book example, not a safe template for every black dragon. The signet language remains an unofficial quiz interpretation.

Tairn is the famous example; the quiz never claims to reproduce Violet’s official bond.
